Who Can Become a Mason?
Membership in Freemasonry is a personal decision that must originate from the individual seeking admission. Freemasons do not solicit men to join the fraternity.
In South Carolina, a prospective member must meet the qualifications established by the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina.
Membership also requires a willingness to uphold the principles and obligations of the fraternity.
Meeting the basic qualifications does not guarantee admission. Each petition is considered individually in accordance with established Masonic procedures.
The Petition Process
For a man who has independently developed an interest in Freemasonry, the process generally begins by contacting a Lodge, asking questions, and becoming acquainted with its members.
At Claremont Lodge No. 64, we welcome opportunities to speak with interested individuals and help them better understand the fraternity.
Initial Inquiry
An interested individual may contact Claremont Lodge directly or submit an inquiry through the Grand Lodge of South Carolina's official inquiry system. An inquiry is simply an opportunity to begin a conversation. It does not constitute a petition for membership.
Submission of a Petition
A man who wishes to seek membership may submit a formal petition, accompanied by the required $35.00 petition fee, which covers the background check.
Committee Consideration
The petition is read before the Lodge and referred to a committee for consideration. This provides an opportunity for the Lodge and the petitioner to become better acquainted and for questions to be addressed.
Lodge Ballot
The Lodge ordinarily votes on the petition at the following month's stated communication. Admission is determined through the established Masonic ballot process. Submission of a petition does not guarantee acceptance.
Receiving the Degrees
Following a favorable ballot and payment of the required degree fees, the candidate may begin receiving the three degrees of Freemasonry: Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason. Each degree introduces teachings and lessons intended to encourage moral development, personal reflection, and a deeper understanding of the fraternity.
Membership Fees and Annual Dues
Claremont Lodge No. 64 believes that men considering membership should have a clear understanding of the financial obligations associated with Freemasonry.
Petition Fee
Covers the required background check. This is the only payment required when submitting a petition.
Degree Fees
Covers all three degrees, an Ahiman Rezon, an apron, and the first year's Lodge dues.
Annual Lodge Dues
Regular annual membership dues beginning after the first year.
Affiliation and Reinstatement
Master Masons interested in affiliating with Claremont Lodge No. 64 are subject to a $35.00 application fee and $100.00 in Lodge dues.
Brothers seeking reinstatement following suspension for nonpayment of dues are responsible for the dues applicable to the year in which they went NPD and the year in which they seek reinstatement.
Individuals seeking affiliation or reinstatement are encouraged to contact the Lodge for additional information.
All fees and dues are subject to change and should be confirmed with the Lodge.
Taking the First Step
